I would greatly appreciate any and all input regarding these topics. However, in Self Defense matters I am in now way interested in discussing why one Martial Art is better than another. As long as you are confident in your particular Art you can be successful.

Women, Self Defense And The Warrior Mindset.

Ladies, EVERY MONTH IS THE MONTH TO LEARN TO PROTECT YOURSELF!!!!!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and usually about that time every year, we (instructors) receive a huge increase in the number of Self Defense training requests. Although I feel that the D.V. Awareness Month is very important for reminding all of us about the horrors women suffer at the hands of their loved ones, it should not stop there.

We have been hearing for years that "predators" are constantly prowling for that perfect victim. The vast majority of the time, these "victims" are women. Unfortunately many of us don't really look into the meaning of that statement until it is too late.

I am a firm believer that the best way to survive an attack is to recognize it before it happens. We will talk about that at a later time, because sometimes that is not an option.

I can sit here and give statistic after statistic, but I won't. I will give only one;

IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY TO SURVIVE AN ATTACK, YOU WILL NOT SURVIVE AN ATTACK!! There is no cute way to say it.

You must prepare yourself both MENTALLY and physically to survive. I placed MENTALLY ahead of physically for a reason. We all know the pros of being physically fit. It is extremely important if you want to lead a long and healthy life. BUT, no matter how rock hard the body, if your "head isn't in it" you will lose.

I can remember teasing my sister up until the point she started singing the song "When a Womans Fed Up (There ain't Nothing You Can Do About It)". So being the brilliant man that I am, I left her alone. That was my que that she was preparing herself MENTALLY to deal with me, and nothing would matter to her but causing me pain.

I like to call this "The Warrior Mentality". You have to believe that by any means, "I AM GOING TO HURT YOU BACK, I WILL SURVIVE THIS"!

Don't ask yourself "Why is this happening to me"? TELL yourself "I AM going to SURVIVE this. You have to prepare yourself to Get Mean, Get Nasty and Get Away. Think about what you need to do to this attacker to stop this attack. Then DO IT, DO IT and DO IT AGAIN and RUN!!. Predators don't like fighters and few will give chase.

Ladies, you don't have to be a 15th degree Black Belt in some ancient form of killing arts. In this 100 m.p.h world we live in, it's almost impossible (and expensive) to make classes 3 days a week and attend tournaments. If you can, that's great and by all means do it. But, if you can't, try to attend a class once a week or twice a month.

Contact your local Martial Arts Schools, YWCA/YMCA, or get a group of friends and contact an instructor that can make house calls. Make it fun. Self Defense is essential but it shouldn't be a chore.

You need to familiarize yourself with at least 5 techniques. Practice these with the kids, with friends or even in the mirror, but practice.

Combined with a Warrior Mindset you can and will survive.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns or suggestions.
